DAVIS HISTORY

How the Davis Farmers Market began

The modern Davis Farmers Market came together in 1975–76 through farmers, students and local-food advocates and became one of California’s early certified farmers markets.

The Davis Farmers Market grew out of the local-food and cooperative movements of the 1970s. After an earlier market attempt, a group of farmers, students and organizers secured City approval and launched the enduring market in Central Park in 1976. It became one of California’s early farmers markets and helped model direct relationships between growers and consumers.
