The old Avenue of the Trees on Russell Boulevard

Black walnut trees planted from the 1870s into 1880 shaded a stretch west of town that later became part of the Lincoln Highway corridor.

A stretch of Russell Boulevard west of Highway 113 once carried a striking roadside canopy known as the Avenue of the Trees. Black walnut trees planted by H. M. LaRue between the 1870s and 1880 were part of an early interest in roadside beautification; the corridor later carried the Lincoln Highway.
