DAVIS HISTORY
Why the City of Davis uses a highwheel bicycle
The highwheel grew from a 1968 centennial-book image into a civic symbol; the City adopted a new bicycle-based logo in 1981.
Davis’s highwheel symbol is tied to both history and the city’s emerging bike identity. A bicycle image was chosen for the cover of the 1968 Davisville centennial history book. Artist Jeanette Copley later developed bicycle-wheel designs for city use, and when City Hall moved in 1981 Davis adopted a new official logo built around the highwheel.
