Why UC Davis has the Domes at Baggins End

Baggins End began as an experimental low-cost housing project; construction of 15 two-person fiberglass dome units started in 1972 with student volunteers.

The Domes were an experiment in how student housing could be cheaper, more private, more innovative and more environmentally aware. Students and Housing Office staff began planning in 1971. Construction of 15 two-person fiberglass dome units started in 1972 with student volunteers and designer Ron Swenson.
