DAVIS HISTORY
How Davis got its “only in Davis” reputation
In the 1990s, national coverage of a toad tunnel, unpaved alleys and even a snoring citation amplified Davis’s image as an unusually earnest and eccentric town.
Davis’s eccentric reputation did not come from one event. In the early 1990s, national media repeatedly picked up stories about a wildlife tunnel for toads, disputes over paving old alleys that outsiders dubbed “historic potholes,” and a noise citation involving snoring. The City’s own history describes those episodes as the comic flip side of a political culture willing to experiment with environmental and preservation ideas.
