DAVIS HISTORY
Was Emerson Junior High designed like a prison?
The present Emerson campus is often described locally as prison-like, but DavisToday found no reliable source showing that prison design was the architect’s intention.
That description is Davis lore, not a documented design brief. DJUSD confirms that the current Emerson campus was built in the late 1970s and opened in 1979–80, but the district’s history does not say it was modeled on a prison. Until an architectural plan, interview or other primary source establishes that intent, DavisToday treats the “designed like a prison” story as local lore rather than fact.
